Most of us have experienced grief and loss in this life that, at least at the time, we felt like we would never overcome. The intrusive and unpredictable tidal waves of emotions that grief can bring vary from person to person. Still, I was sure that my early childhood and young adult experiences with grief and loss had prepared me for future losses.
Well, I was wrong.
My dad lost his battle to a motor neuron disease called ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) in the winter of 2021. I thought I would never get through or overcome the deep sadness I felt. This particular loss left me on a turbulent journey of emotional despair and deep sorrow. Even with time, space, prayer, and counseling, I discovered that there were holes in my own coping toolbox.
Joy Eventually Does Come in The Morning
However, the word of God encouraged me that weeping may endure for a night, but JOY comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5). After some time of feeling like I was in my midnight of sadness, joy came for me finally one morning. I learned that it takes time and space to journey through this part of the grief process.
It was the illumination of the intersection between grief and God’s grace that changed my life and allowed me to overcome. What I learned is that each person experiences and copes with grief differently. It’s important to recognize that there is no template on the correct way to grieve — or a time limit on the process. For some, it simply may take longer.
Grace and Patience Are Part of the Grieving Process
My biggest gifts and blessings that I can take away from my grief journey are: Be kind to yourself and patient with your grief process and journey. During your time of sadness, if the tears are coming, let them flow. Be free and allow your grief journey to be a space that’s openly explored.
I take each day as it comes and utilize the support systems that surround me. I am an overcomer. I can do all things through Christ, which gives me strength (Phillipians 4:13). I am reminded about the intersection between grief and God’s Grace.
So just rest in his arms and he will give you rest. You are an overcomer too!
